Except for Colusa, photos were taken from a moving train through dirty windows.
We took the train from Emeryville to Burlington, Iowa, to visit family in Illinois.  It takes two full days, so we booked a small sleeper.  It was pretty small, with bunk beds.  The beds were a little firm for us, and we both had trouble sleeping.  When the upper bunk was down, there was practically no room.  With the upper bunk up, and the lower bunk made into seats, there was a small table that could be set down (airplane style), but knees were a problem.  And very little room for luggage – the big pieces were on the luggage racks downstairs.  Partly because of the cramped quarters, and partly because the windows are bigger in the observation car and you can see both sides, we spent most of our time in the observation car.
